Andrew Charman is a graduate of the University of Cape Town and Cambridge. He has worked as a development practitioner, consultant and researcher in Malawi and South Africa. He is a director of the Sustainable Livelihoods Foundation and heads the Formalising Informal Micro-Enterprises Project which aims to develop a comprehensive understanding of South Africa’s urban informal economy to promote business formalisation, opportunities for growth and investment in micro-enterprises. His research interests include Informal sector spatial dynamics, micro-enterprise competition, and understanding the impact of policies on micro-enterprise growth and self-employment.

A forum for economic policy debate

Econ3x3 promotes analysis and debate on unemployment and employment, income distribution and inclusive growth in South Africa. It publishes accessible research- and expertise-based articles and provides a forum for engagement between research and policy making.
